This Pi Beta Phi Alumnae considers herself a lifelong learner as a graduate of Social Work and Psychology with honours and is now pursuing her master’s degree in education. As an Indigenous women born with communication disabilities, I have not let perceptions or stereotypes define me or what I am capable of achieving. Embracing my culture has led me on a path of self-discovery, which became the basis of my REAL Resiliency Campaign. My international blog teaches others - that they do not need to be perfect, just REAL. Respect, Empower, Action, and Lifestyle. Showcasing representation of passionate change makers aiming to make the world a better place. With the aspiration to convert REAL Resiliency into a Non-Profit Organization. This 24-year-old Southern Ontario girl volunteers over 800 hours a year, is a Graduate Researcher researching “Self-Disclosure Experiences of Post-Secondary Students with Non-Apparent Disabilities", and aims to empower marginalized communities to cultivate their resiliency to change the language of societal oppression!

After discovering that nearly 100% of people around the world battle some form of societal oppression, our Founder Michayla knew there had to be something done about it. REAL Resiliency was founded to re-write the narratives of societal oppression and empower those living with adversities. REAL Resiliency is an up-coming Non-Profit organization providing support for marginalized communities while empowering clients to change the language of societal oppression; while encouraging others to become REAL Resilient Advocates for change.

PRESENT YOUR WHY

Growing up in a world where success was not in Michayla’s definition, fuelled her motivation to create a platform/Non-Profit where individuals felt they were accepted for who they are. Michayla grew up with a severe Learning Disability, Auditory/Sensory Processing Disorder, and four Mental Illness: Persistent Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder; while also discovering her Indigenous Identity as an Oji-Cree Women (Ojibwa and Cree). Michayla is also a survivor of childhood trauma, self-harm, and eight suicide attempts. Michayla is no stranger to the effects of societal oppression. She created REAL Resiliency to re-write the narratives of societal oppression and empower those living with adversities. As a Registered Social Service Worker, Philanthropic Leader, and Community Activist, Michayla took her personal, professional, and academic experience to found a movement that advocates for all marginalized and vulnerable populations. Witnessing first hand the pain and suffering of individuals within these communities sparked her passion to empower future community activists.

WHY IS BEING A FEMALE CEO SO IMPORTANT TO YOU?

“Being an Indigenous Female Entrepreneur, especially during these times, means I am able to inspire and empower marginalized communities to pursue their aspirations. Being told at a young age that I would not be able to even work, let alone own my own business, is the exact reason why being a Female Entrepreneur is important to me. Realizing that the years of pain and suffering I went through can be turned into something that supports others through their battle with societal oppression. Especially working with upcoming activists helping them discover their own personal platform; then allowing them to have a voice through my organization means the world to me. Each person I work with inspires me to be a better version of myself and ways in which I can continue to provide empowering programs. Being able to help them discover their own personal social justice platform, watching them become the activists they’ve always wanted to be. Being a Female Entrepreneur who is a part of a marginalized community means I can advocate for those whose voices have been taken by society's preconceived biases. Being a Female Entrepreneur means I can make the world a more inclusive place.”

Be you, be real, be resilient!
